FBK is looking for a Researcher in Integration and Packaging of Radiation Sensors for Material Science and Space Applications, partially funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) IPCEI-ME/CT and the project Space It Up
FBK is a private research institution based in Trento (Italy), operating in different scientific fields and disciplines. As such, it keeps the Autonomous Province of Trento within the mainstream of international research. FBK comprises 12 research centres with activities and production available at http://www.fbk.eu/research-centers
In particular, the FBK Centre for Sensors and Devices (FBK-SD) (https://www.fbk.eu/en/sensors-devices/) is an applied research centre that operates in the following scientific and technological areas: quantum technologies, detectors, microsystems and integrated systems. The FBK-SD has extremely advanced technical know-how in innovative devices design and fabrication technologies as well as in the system integration. The strategic mission of the FBK-SD is scientific excellence combined with the ability to exploit research results. The innovation model is open to collaboration in national and international expertise networks.
Workplace Description
The position available is in the Custom Radiation Sensors (CRS) unit of FBK-SD. The CRS Research Unit carries out R&D activities on advanced radiation, photonics, optoelectronics and image sensors fabricated with custom technologies. The main research activities of the group are on the design, development and characterization of silicon radiation detectors, single-photon sensors and advanced image sensors. More information about CRS is available at https://sd.fbk.eu/en/crs/
Background information and description of research projects
This position is offered within the following projects:
In the IPCEI ME/CT project, FBK intends to significantly expand and improve its manufacturing and integration facilities to achieve high-level and reliable heterogeneous production capabilities to maximise research and competitiveness in the market. In IPCEI ME 1, FBK is developing the 3D integration platform applied to SiPM and SPAD TECHNOLOGIES. Exploiting the results of IPCEI ME 1, the project will mainly work on the integration of new materials (Silicon Carbide & Germanium-on-Silicon) and hetero-integration to extend the capabilities of already established silicon platforms.
The Space It Up project aims to promote innovation and expand fundamental knowledge such as numerical models, innovative satellite architectures and constellations, new mission profiles, advanced instrumentation and Artificial Intelligence-based applications; promote a sustainable future thanks to innovative space technologies that would allow us to observe climate change and predict extreme weather events; ensure long-term human permanence in extraterrestrial space towards a “multiplanetary” society; strengthen space as an "ecosystem" in Italy by covering the entire value chain of research and development in the space field, thanks to effective coordination between universities, research bodies and a system of small, medium and large industries.
FBK-SD participates to 3 Spokes:
- Spoke 4: Next generation detectors of ionizing radiation and fields for remote sensing;
- Spoke 5: Planetary Protection and Geohazards Mitigation;
- Spoke 6: Protection of critical infrastructures and Space Weather.
FBK-SD will contribute with its experience in the development of SiPM (Silicon Photomultiplier) detectors , LGAD (Low Gain Avalanche Detector) and Maps (CMOS detector), integration of nano-satellite payloads.
Job Description
FBK-SD is looking for a dynamic, highly motivated, independent researcher in the field of silicon radiation sensors, in the back end of line, system integration, packaging, functional characterization and customization for different applications and set-ups. The sensors are to be used to build next-generation systems in scientific experiments as performed in astrophysics missions, synchrotron radiation and free electron laser laboratories as well as industrial applications especially in materials analysis and non-destructive testing.
The research activity will focus on the development of custom electromagnetic radiation sensors/systems for the different applications and wavelength ranges. Depending on the ability of the candidates and the current needs, the activity could cover the complete prototyping cycle from the conception of new technological solutions and understanding/improvement of device/system properties, design, integration, experimental characterization and qualification for space exploitation. The work will be performed in close collaboration with other device and integration scientists and engineers. Part of the activity will focus on project management, coordinating sub-unit efforts, maintaining contacts with network collaborators, writing reports, ensuring compliance with the quality management system. The selected candidate will become a key part of the team working on ongoing projects and future developments, actively participating in the dissemination and networking activities.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- Master Degree in Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Physics or related fields;
- Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics, or related fields;
