FBK is looking for a Senior Researcher in Materials Development and Characterization for Semiconductor and Polymer Technologies; this position is partially funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
 

FBK is a research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and is designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. The strategic mission of the FBK-SD is scientific excellence combined with the ability to exploit research results. The innovation model is open to collaboration in national and international expertise networks.

Workplace Description

The available position is in the Materials and Topologies for Sensors and Devices (MTSD) Unit of FBK-SD. The unit conducts R&D and service activities based on advanced spectroscopy and spectrometry techniques, focusing on several areas of advanced materials, such as silicon devices and wide-bandgap semiconductors, advanced coating and new polymers. These activities also support the development of advanced materials and devices, including quantum and optoelectronic technologies. The activities are carried out in collaboration with the other units of FBK-SD. MTSD is active on several projects focused on nano technologies, material development and advancement of characterization methodologies

Background information and description of research projects

This position is offered within the IPCEI ME/CT project. In the IPCEI ME/CT project, FBK intends to significantly expand and improve its manufacturing and integration facilities to achieve high-level and reliable heterogeneous production capabilities to maximize research and competitiveness in the market. Exploiting the results of IPCEI ME, the project will mainly work on the integration of new materials (Silicon Carbide & Germanium-on-Silicon) and heterointegration to extend the capabilities of already established silicon platforms. 

Job Description

The selected researcher will be responsible for advanced analytical characterization activities supporting the development of novel materials and devices. In particular, the researcher will contribute to the development of innovative materials, with a focus on synthesis and characterization. The position requires the ability to set up new research activities and coordinate other researchers. Moreover, the researcher is expected to make a direct and significant contribution to writing project proposals and to expanding FBK-SD’s international collaborations. Close collaboration with other units within the centre is expected, both in terms of service and research support. The candidate is also expected to have prior experience in the above-mentioned activities. The selected candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team and be engaged in dissemination, networking and project writing tasks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Development and implementation of advanced material synthesis and characterization methodologies;
  • Contribution to the development of semiconductor and polymer-based materials;
  • Coordination of experimental research activities within the MTSD unit;
  • Contribution to proposal writing and international research projects;
  • Dissemination of scientific results through publications and conferences.

Depending on organizational needs, the selected candidate may also be involved in additional activities or projects within the Centre.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Master's Degree in Physics, Materials Science or related fields;
  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science or related fields;
  • Solid experience (more than 10 years after the PhD) in material research;
  • Solid background in material syntheses and analyses;
  • Strong experience in proposal writing and coordination; 
  • Prove autonomy in performing experimental research activities;
  • Proven track record of scientific publications;
  • Experience in international collaborative research projects;
  • Language assessment according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): level of knowledge required. Knowledge of English will be verified during the interview on a technical or scientific topic and must be equal to or exceed level B2.   • Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills.

Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:

  • Solid background in material science;
  • Solid background in semiconductor physics and technology;
  • Solid background in polymer materials;
  • Experience with advanced analytical characterization equipment;
  • Italian language working knowledge;
  • Experience in paper writing.

Selection process and assessment criteria

The Evaluating Committee will be appointed by the HR Director at the end of the application deadline. The recruiting process will be handled in accordance with the “Gender and generational equal opportunities, as well as the employment inclusion of people with disabilities in public contracts financed with the resources of the PNRR and PNCguidelines  and with the Foundation's Gender Equality PlanThe Committee may compile the short-list of the candidates admitted to the interview, remotely or in presence. The short-list shall be compiled based on the requirements set out in the call (contained in the requirements of the job description), with the support of the screening of CVs and any other required documents. Candidates with a minimum score will be admitted to the interview phase. Shortlisted candidates must do at least one interview with the Committee. 

In case of specific need, the Selection Committee can also meet remotely, by teleconference or videoconference, provided that all members can be identified and that they are able to follow and intervene in the discussion, as well as to receive, transmit and view documents. During the evaluation step, evaluation support tools such as tests or questionnaires may be used. Furthermore, group tests and/or practical tests may be administered.

Evaluation criteria 

The selection process includes two evaluation moments led by the Commission: the screening and the interview phase. The screening process will be based on the evaluation of the qualifications and expertise that the candidate expresses on the resume. A maximum of 40 points will be allocated to this assessment phase and only candidates obtaining at least 25 points will be admitted to the interview. The interview scores will be assigned to candidates by the Commission according to the following criteria: the presentation of their personal research profile; the knowledge about the scientific domain, the experience in working for research projects and the language skills. A maximum of 60 points will be allocated to this assessment phase. The interview is considered as “passed” if the applicant obtains at least 45 points. The final score will be used to generate the final suitability list for each job position.

Results of the selection process
