Internship Opportunity at E3DA Research Unit - EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF A STAR TRACKER SENSOR THROUGH AI

FBK is opening a new internship opportunity in the Energy Efficient Embedded Digital Architectures - E3DA research unit of DigiS research center. The E3DA research unit focuses on wireless resource- constrained embedded technologies with a system-level approach targeting energy efficiency and Artificial Intelligence (AI) embedding at the very edge. Energy Efficiency in networked embedded systems is one of the leading research challenges, particularly in recent years where the pervasiveness of smart, tiny low-cost electronics and new wireless protocols availability is enabling the Internet of Things (IoT). The activity spans from hardware-software development for low-power wireless smart sensing devices to power management techniques, low power multi-hop wireless protocols, and on-board processing in resource-limited devices. We also apply RF technology for proximity detection and localization techniques. The unit applies the research results in several application domains, such as those typical of pervasive and wearable computing and IoT.

Internship opportunity

The project aims to evaluate the capabilities of a low-power camera developed by FBK, specifically designed to be a star tracker for localization on-board a satellite. The sensor allows for analyzing different regions of interest (ROIs) in the image through various image processing approaches. The goal is to explore the potential applications of the sensor in different fields using image analysis and computer vision algorithms.

The project will be tailored to the student's capabilities and can include activities such as sensor programming and testing, image processing and analysis, development of software for data acquisition, logging, and display, and using AI techniques for processing sensor data.

The project will be executed through several steps, in cooperation with the supervisor, which may include:
  • Analysis of the sensor's hardware and software framework provided by FBK, with a focus on its advanced features and capabilities.
  • Sensor data acquisition and use of the sensor's processing capabilities to analyze image data.
  • Image processing and analysis of different algorithms for data processing.
  • Optimization of algorithms, integration with existing code, and prototype implementation.

Background required

This internship opportunity is recommended to students in engineering and computer science looking to gain experience in image processing, computer vision, and AI. The student should have familiarity with image processing and computer vision, programming in C/C++ and/or Python, and basic electronic schematic reading.

We offer:

  • Curricular internship (no allowance);
  • 3-6 months, depending on the candidate’s needs and preparation;
  • Canteen (except for UniTN students;
  • Support for the search for accommodation at the affiliated structures (no allowance).
