The Italian-German Historical Institute (ISIG) is a research center that promotes historical studies in the field of early modern and contemporary history. Research activities are highly interdisciplinary, transnational. ISIG’s researchers develop projects in collaboration with other institutions and conduct individual studies in political, religious, social, cultural, environmental, and economic history. The study activities promoted by ISIG maintain a constant dialogue with the most recent international historiographic trends.

Job Description
The researcher will work within the framework of the FIS Research Advanced Grant BlackItaly. One of the project’s main objectives is to investigate the presence of African sub-Saharan slaves who arrived in the Italian peninsula through the different trajectories of the Atlantic slave trade from the late mid-15th century until the second half of the 19th century, in order to frame in a completely innovative way the perception of slavery and racism in Italian history.
FBK is looking to cover the position with a dynamic, highly motivated, independent researcher specialising in the nineteenth-century Italian peninsula, the history of slavery, and the history of the Catholic Church and that of the missions. The candidate will work within ISIG, reporting directly to the project’s PI and the Director of the Institute. The successful candidate will be involved in research on modern history. She/he will also be expected to develop a working relationship with the various research activities currently being conducted at the institute.
The candidate is expected to contribute actively to the academic life of the Centre in all its aspects: to participate regularly in project meetings and training, to contribute actively to the activities of the institute, and to participate in the editorial boards of the online Journal – ARO-Reviews online. Within the framework of the BlackItaly project, he/she is expected to map the presence of individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa in the Italian peninsula during the nineteenth century and analyze the anti-slavery debate, particularly from the perspectives of the Catholic Church and Italian missionaries in Africa. Additionally, the candidate is expected to participate in the various activities planned by the project, such as organizing the exhibition and constructing the digital archive. Finally, the candidate is expected to publish an article and a book chapter in the monographic issue and collective book, the project's scientific outputs.
Job Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- PhD or equivalent 3 years post-master experience in modern history;
- Professional and thorough knowledge of modern history;
- International research experience;
- Research experience in the history of slavery and the Catholic Church in the nineteenth century;
- Good knowledge of another European language (among French, Spanish or Portuguese)
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Italian;
- Organisational skills.
- Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills;
- Self-motivation and result orientation;
Furthermore, the following requirements will be positively evaluated:
- Involvement in international research networks;
- Experience in public engagement and promoting academic events;

Type of contract: Fixed Term Contract
Working hours: full-time (38 hours)
Gross annual salary: about € 44.000, plus objectives achievements bonus
Start date: June 2025
Duration: 36 months with the possibility of extending the contract depending on funding
