Internship in Vision Algorithms Applied to Robotic Manipulation in Industrial Environments

FBK is a private research institution based in Trento (Italy) and operating in different scientific fields and disciplines. As such, it has the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento within the mainstream of international research. FBK is made up of twelve research centers, whose activities and production are available at http://www.fbk.eu.

Workplace
The Digital Industry (DI) Center, one of the Centers of the Bruno Kessler Foundation, focuses its research on digital technologies for the manufacturing industry by creating applications for critical systems, adaptive and autonomous systems, advanced perception, diagnostics, and prediction systems. The research in the DI centre also involves fields related to digital agriculture, cultural heritage, and geomatics.
The Technologies of Vision (TeV) research laboratory conducts research in the fields of Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and Robotic Perception. TeV focuses on developing techniques for 2D and 3D scene understanding, including classification, detection, segmentation, tracking, foundation models, large multimodal models, and neural rendering. Its research has applications in various domains:

  • Manufacturing: quality control, robotic manipulation, 3D scene understanding.
  • Agritech: drone imaging, 3D reconstruction, detection and segmentation.
  • Security: document analysis and verification.
  • Automation: object 6D pose estimation, visual language assistants, embodied reasoning.

More information about the TeV lab is available at https://tev.fbk.eu.

Project  description
The internship is focused on developing computer vision and robotics solutions for perception and robotic manipulation in industrial environments. Within this framework, TeV is developing advanced perception pipelines using simulated environments to model, test, and evaluate complex robotic manipulation tasks.

The goal of the internship is to build, test, and evaluate an integrated vision perception pipeline for industrial applications. Core activities include: designing and implementing vision algorithms for 6D pose estimation, segmentation, and automated visual quality checking within a simulated environment; testing and evaluating algorithm performance in terms of accuracy, robustness, and latency; and benchmarking pipeline responses across diverse manipulation scenarios. Extension goals include synthetic-to-real domain adaptation, multi-sensor data fusion, and 3D point-cloud processing for object manipulation.

The internship can be fitted into an MSc thesis and offers close mentoring from the TeV group, access to the lab's GPU/cluster compute infrastructure, and the possibility of a technical report or paper draft.

Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:

  • MSc degree (Computer Science, Data Science, Robotics, or related field), interest in computer vision and robotics, solid Python, C, and C++ programming skills, and familiarity with (or willingness to learn) ROS (Robot Operating System), PyTorch, OpenCV, 3D processing libraries (e.g., Open3D), and robotic simulation tools;
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English or Italian;
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment,
  • Good communication and relational skills;
  • Self-motivation and result orientation.
