Software tools developer in the field of remote sensing and geospatial data processing at Digital Society Center

The Digital Society (DIGIS) research center of FBK is committed to comprehensively exploring, understanding, and shaping the intricate interplay between digital technology and the fabric of human society, embracing the vision that digital technology can serve as a catalyst for positive societal change. 
In particular, the Digital Society center conducts pioneering research focused on two crucial areas where ICT can have a profound impact on contemporary society: Digital Twins for Human Society to better understand, predict, and proactively address the multifaceted challenges facing them; and New Media and Education for a Resilient Society - exploring the dynamics of new media and developing advanced digital solutions towards a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient society.
The center is composed by a multidisciplinary team of approximately 75 researchers, technologists and managers (including PhD students) organized in 7 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the ICT domain and 2 support units focusing on project management and technology maturation. The position is opened by the Remote Sensing for Digital Earth (RSDE) Research Unit.  The RSDE Unit focuses on research in the remote sensing field with specific attention to: the use of remote sensing, image/signal processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, machine/deep learning technologies, in several application domains for supporting a digital monitoring, analysis and sustainable management of the Earth; the development of efficient services with high impact; the definition of integrated systems for an effective and low-cost management of environment, natural resources and anthropic activities. RSDE has specific domain knowledge in managing multitemporal information in Satellite Image Time Series (SITS). More information about the RSDE unit is available at: https://rsde.fbk.eu/ .

Job Description

The Remote Sensing for Digital Earth (RSDE) Research Unit is looking for a Software tools developer in the field of remote sensing and geospatial data processing. 

The candidate is expected to:

  • contribute to integration of remote sensing and geospatial data processing algorithm into software tools, available EURO HPC and EU AI Factory tools and facility, as well as the MLOps-based platform developed by FBK;
  • design tools being compatible with the most common remote sensing (e.g., Sentinel) and geospatial (e.g., OpenStreetMap) data;
  • development of users’ interface and dashboard for the access to geospatial products, including web development skills and corresponding frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue, etc);
  • participate in activities of various projects funded by the European Union, Spatial Agencies (e.g., ESA, ASI), local government and/or small companies. 

Job Requirements 

The ideal candidate should have: 

  • Master degree in Telecommunication Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Earth Science, or related fields;
  • Good programming skills in languages like Python, C++ and/or Matlab;
  • Knowledge of distributed systems: scripting, virtualization;
  • Experience with standard software development and debugging environments under Unix/Linux;
  • Knowledge of geospatial tools (e.g., QGIS, SNAP), libraries (e.g., gdal, geopandas) and/or practices;
  • Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence solutions;
  • Team working attitude;
  • Good communication and relation skills;
  • Ability to meet objectives and deadlines;
  • Proficiency in English language (oral and written);
  • Basic knowledge of Italian.

Other professional skills nice to have:

  • Knowledge of remote sensing data structure and open access database organization (e.g., Sentinel, Landsat, etc.);
  • Good practices in coding (classes, methods, error handling, etc.);
  • Knowledge of machine learning libraries (Tensorflow, Pytorch, opencv);
  • Knowledge on DevOps or MLOps practices;
  • Problem-solving attitude and curiosity are welcome;
  • Previous work experience in related contexts.

Type of contract: fixed-term contract

Duration: 12 months

Working hours: full-time (38 h per week)

Start date: preferably August 2026

Gross annual salary: about € 41.240 , plus objectives achievements bonus
