Internships, stages, and thesis projects for Process & Data Intelligence (PDI) Research Unit

The Process & Data Intelligence (PDI) Research Unit, as part of the Augmented Intelligence (AI) centre, is offering opportunities for internships, stages, and thesis projects (undergraduate and master level) in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Business Process Management.

The PDI unit focuses on the research and development of methods, techniques, and tools for the intelligent discovery, formalization, and use of knowledge, with particular emphasis on process-oriented technologies. Our goal is to design AI systems that not only advance scientific knowledge but also translate into practical, scalable solutions with real-world impact.

We are looking for motivated students interested in contributing to both research and development activities in a dynamic and international environment. The scope of each opportunity will be defined together with the candidate, depending on their background and goals (thesis vs. internship, bachelor vs. master).

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, development, and evaluation of AI-based methods for structured, temporal, and sequential data
  • Explainable AI (XAI) methods for complex data analysis and model interpretability
  • Predictive process monitoring, advanced data representation, and encoding techniques
  • AI-enhanced simulation, hybrid modeling, for data-driven decision support
  • Sequential decision making, via reinforcement learning, optimisation and causal inference
  • Software development for AI prototypes, research tools, data pipelines, and experimental frameworks
  • Implementation, testing, and integration of machine learning and deep learning solutions in Python

We are also interested in additional topics and proposals aligned with the broader activities of the group, including both research and software development aspects.

Requirements

  • Background in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or related fields
  • Programming skills (preferably Python)
  • Basic knowledge of Machine Learning / Deep Learning

Practical information

  • Duration: typically 3–6 months (internships) or aligned with thesis requirements
  • Location: FBK, Povo (Trento, Italy)
  • Support for accommodation (for off-site candidates)
  • Access to internal services and facilities
