Internship in the field of “Explainable AI for remote sensing tasks"

In this context, the Remote Sensing for Digital Earth (RSDE) Research Unit of the Digital Society Center focuses on the automated analysis of remote sensing images for Earth Observation and space exploration, consistent with the Foundation's objectives.

Planned activities

The RSDE Research Unit of the Digital Society Center is seeking a young recent graduate interested in pursuing an internship in the design of an Explainable AI method for the analysis of Remote Sensing images. The ideal candidate is a proactive, dynamic young person with strong organizational and interpersonal skills, a propensity for teamwork, and a motivation to undertake training experience in an international context. 

The intern, working alongside the Research Unit staff, will mainly contribute to the development of the following activities: 

• Design of a novel Explainable AI (XAI) method for Remote Sensing image analysis using deep learning and attention mechanisms.
• Experimental evaluation on multi-source datasets to assess performance and interpretability.

The opportunity to join the team on other active and developing projects during the internship period and to gain experience in a dynamic and challenging environment, such as FBK, will also be offered.

Requirements

• At least a bachelor’s degree (or near completion) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Telecommunication and/or Electronic Engineering, or related fields;
• Knowledge of major subjects related to computer science and image processing;
• Fluent knowledge of written and spoken Italian and English (min. level B2);
• Relational and teamwork skills;
• Good adaptability, flexibility, and initiative skills;
• Computer skills in the use of Python, deep learning libraries (Tensorflow or PyTorch).

Internship information

• The closing date for applications is 31 December 2026; however, the position may be filled earlier if a suitable candidate is identified.
• Internship experience duration: 3 to 6 months, depending on the candidate’s needs and experience
• The internship experience will take place at the Science and Technology Cluster at the Povo location
• We offer support in finding accommodation at affiliated facilities, in the case of off-site candidates
• We offer the possibility to use the internal canteen service
• Possible recognition of participation allowance
